HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Another fake $100 bill was discovered in Havre early Thursday morning at the Town Pump store.
Havre Police Chief Gabe Matosich says that a woman tried to purchase some items at about 4:25 in the morning with a bill that had Chinese writing on it. Police documents say that the bill was also missing the watermark and failed a check with the counterfeit detector pen.
Matosich says they are still looking for the woman involved and investigating where she got it. He says this bill appears to be different than other fake or counterfeit bills they have received recently.
Matosich says that they have seen several different counterfeit bill circulating town and he wants people to know that it is illegal to use them as legal tender. He suspects some of these bills have been purchased online.
Matosich urges merchants to be careful when accepting bills and to look them over carefully. Most of the fake bills they have seen look like real money at a glance, but are clearly marked as “not legal tender”. The most common fake bills they have seen are $100, but they have also seen some fake $20 bills.
